When it comes to affairs of the heart, Latin people are renowned as having an intense passion for love and romance is a major factor in winning hearts. There are many imaginative and highly-descriptive romantic Spanish language phrases and you’re going to add a nice selection of them to your vocab right now.
So, first, you’ll need to find someone you can be romantic with. ¿Es obvio, verdad? In Spanish, the phrase is:
Echarse un/a novio/a – To get yourself a boyfriend/girlfriend.
When you have a new partner, you can decide if your relationship will be: “un ligue”, which is a casual relationship, or “una relación”, which is a more committed type of relationship, which you may hear as: “una historia” too. Confusingly, if you’re having “un ligue” your partner is also referred to as “un ligue”!
This next Spanish phrase is a very common way to ask someone out and is used throughout the Spanish-speaking world:
¿Qué tal si damos una vuelta? – How about we go for a walk/ride?
Really easy, and hopefully, you’ll have received a positive response so you’ll now need to have some sweet romantic, easy Spanish phrases to refer to your new flame. Try these:
Corazón, mi corazón – Heart, my heart.
Cariño, mi cariño – Caress, my caress.
Pichoncito, mi pichoncito – Turtledove, my turtledove.
Mi alma gemela – My soul mate, literally: my twin soul.
Mi media naranja – My half an orange, i.e. your other half.
All of these are nice romantic ways to refer to your sweetheart, and all of them are used commonly.
To finish, let’s have a couple of my favorite romantic Spanish phrases called “piropos” which are pick-up lines. There must be thousands of piropos, ranging from the highly-amusing, the romantically poetic and the sexually suggestive, to the cringe-inducing! The first of my favorite piropos is one I use a lot and I always get a favorable reaction!
¡Qué curvas – y yo sin freno! – What curves – and I’m without brakes!
The second is a piropo that I’m sure the chicas will be aching to add to their list of romantic Spanish phrases:
Que Dios te guarde mi rey, y que las llaves me las entregue a mí – May God keep you my King and deliver me the keys.
Then again…!
Sprinkle the above romantic Spanish phrases into your ever-increasing streetwise Spanish vocabulary and they’ll earn you respect and admiration, and possibly a little bit more…!
